RWANDA • PRIVATE JOURNEYS

Small country.
Extraordinary depth.

Mountain gorillas in the Virunga mountains. Chimpanzees in Nyungwe’s rainforest. A lake shore that invites you to stay a little longer.

Rwanda rewards attention, with a journey shaped around a few places and the time to experience them well.

some encounters stay with you.
MOUNTAIN GORILLAS • VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, RWANDA
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

In the presence
of mountain gorillas.

Volcanoes National Park protects the steep forested slopes of Rwanda’s Virunga mountains. Mountain gorilla tracking is the defining experience here, with rangers leading you through the forest to a habituated group.

The route and walking time depend on where the gorillas are. Forest, weather and terrain are part of the experience, and the morning deserves your full attention.

Build the stay around the trek.

Arrive with time to settle in. Choose accommodation that supports the early start, and leave the next part of the day unhurried. Golden monkey tracking or a further walk can be considered as separate activities, subject to availability and your interests.

The permit date should anchor the plan. We will discuss the current conditions and your comfort on foot before shaping the wider route.

NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

Another forest.
Another rhythm.

Chimpanzee calls carry through Nyungwe’s montane rainforest. Tracking starts early and can involve a demanding walk as the animals move through their habitat. It has a different energy from a gorilla encounter, with sightings that can be fleeting rather than still.

Let Nyungwe be a stay.

Make room for the forest beyond one activity: primates, birdlife and walking trails. The canopy walkway offers a different view of the trees and is a separate experience to plan.

The forest’s steep, sometimes muddy paths deserve suitable footwear and realistic expectations. Confirm the current activity arrangements for your dates, and choose a comfortable base for the early tracking departure.

MAKE ROOM FOR A DIFFERENT DAY

Between forest mornings,
find a wider view.

LAKE KIVU

A pause by the water.

Lake Kivu lies along Rwanda’s western edge, framed by hills and shoreline towns. Rubavu and Karongi offer different bases for a slower stay.

A lakeside pause can make sense between forest chapters. Keep an afternoon free, or discuss walking, cycling and time on the water as part of a longer stay.

stay a little longer.
AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

The savannah chapter.

Akagera brings open country, woodland, wetlands and lakes into the picture. Safari drives offer a different perspective from Rwanda’s forest experiences, with the possibility of seeing the Big Five.

It deserves time of its own. The best combination depends on how much travelling you want to do and which landscapes matter most.

THOUGHTFUL PLANNING

A considered route
makes the difference.

01

Start with the permits.

Gorilla and chimpanzee tracking are separate activities with separate arrangements. Confirm the dates, availability and current visitor conditions before building the rest of your stay around them.

02

Plan for the terrain.

Be clear about your comfort on steep and uneven ground. Weather and animal movements influence the walk. Follow the ranger briefing and the protected area’s visitor rules throughout the experience.

03

Give the road some room.

A compact country still needs thoughtful travel days. Choose the places you most want to experience, then allow time for the journeys between them. Avoid pairing a demanding forest morning with an unnecessarily rushed onward plan.

RWANDA & THE WIDER JOURNEY

A forest chapter.
A fresh perspective.

Rwanda can be the whole journey, or a carefully planned addition to a Tanzania safari. Mountain gorillas and open plains offer a striking contrast when the connections and total time work well.

If you are weighing Rwanda against Uganda, begin with the wider experience you want. Uganda adds its own gorilla settings, Kibale and savannah options; Rwanda brings Volcanoes, Nyungwe and the possibility of a Lake Kivu pause. Compare the whole route, not only the trek.

Tell us who is travelling, your preferred pace and the dates you have in mind. Current minimum ages, activity suitability, permits and actual connections need to be checked for the journey.

ELEGANCE. UNTAMED.

Begin with what
moves you.

A mountain gorilla encounter. Chimpanzees in the forest. The quiet pleasure of staying somewhere for longer. Share your starting point and we will help give it shape.

Elegance. Untamed.
