Wildebeest and zebra move through the greater Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. The story changes with the rains, so a good migration safari starts with one question: when are you travelling?
We use your dates to choose a region and a camp base, leaving enough time to watch what unfolds. Seven to ten days is a starting point for discussion; the right length depends on your route and interests.
THE MIGRATION CYCLE / A SEASONAL GUIDE
An annual circle. Always in motion.
THE KIFARU MIGRATION MAP / TAP TO OPEN FULL SIZE
a circle, shaped by the rains.
The months on this map are a broad guide. Rainfall and grazing shift the timing, the route and how the herds spread across the landscape.
01 / JANUARY–MARCH
Southern plains & calving
Fresh grazing draws herds to the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. Calving gives this chapter its character, with newborn wildebeest and predators on the plains.
02 / APRIL–JUNE
Westward, then north
As the southern plains change, herds move through central and western Serengeti. The Grumeti area becomes part of the journey before movement continues north.
03 / JULY–OCTOBER
Northern Serengeti & the Mara
Herds range across the northern Serengeti and into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Mara River crossings may happen during this phase; patience matters and crossings are never guaranteed.
04 / NOVEMBER–DECEMBER
The return south
The short rains bring fresh grazing farther south. Herds move back through the Serengeti towards the southern plains, and the cycle begins again.
MORE THAN A CROSSING
The quieter parts count.
The plains
Calves, grazing herds and predators give the southern plains their own chapter. A calving-season interest shapes a different journey from a river-crossing interest.
The moving herds
Central and western areas offer different perspectives as the herds move. We consider the season and the wider wildlife experience when choosing your base.
The river country
The northern Serengeti and the Mara become part of the conversation for crossing-season travel. A crossing is a possibility to wait for, never an appointment to promise.
sometimes the best moment isn’t the one you came for.
SERENGETI / A JOURNEY IN MOTION
WHERE YOU STAY
Close to the story. Comfortably your own.
a good camp buys you time.
A mobile tented camp can bring you close to a seasonal wildlife focus. A lodge or private villa can offer a different balance of space, comfort and time in camp.
We weigh location and guiding alongside the room itself. Camp moves, openings and availability need checking against your dates before a route is confirmed.
ROOM TO ADAPT
A little patience. A better safari.
Give the migration time rather than fitting it into a single hurried game drive. Early starts, long wildlife waits and flexible meals may be part of the experience.
Tell us whether photography, predators, calving or simply the scale of the plains draws you most. Tanzania alone may be right; adding Kenya should earn its place in the journey.
